After a 10-year battle, Brooks-sponsored pro runner Gabriele “Gabe” Grunewald died from adenoid cystic carcinoma a year ago. To honor her talent and legacy, Brooks has released a special edition of its cushioned tempo shoe, the Launch 7. The Brave Like Gabe Launch 7 will feature the message “Running on Hope” in white across a blue upper, with the “Brave Like Gabe” logo stamped on the heel and sparkly laces that represent Gabe’s optimism and spirit. One hundred percent of the profits from sales of the shoe will go to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center on behalf of the Brave Like Gabe Foundation. More about Gabe’s life and foundation, which focuses on raising funds and awareness for rare-cancer research, can be found at bravelikegabe.org.

Nike’s latest cushioning concept, Joyride, uses thousands of thermoplastic elastomer beads that compress and shift as you touch down. The Joyride Dual Run uses the beads in the heel, where braking forces are highest, and soft foam for the rest of the midsole. The resulting ride is plush and smooth, ideal for new runners, although the forefoot proved too narrow for all of our testers and caused hot spots for some.

High-end line Cole Haan has introduced its first dedicated running shoes, the Outpace and Overtake—two comfortable but firmly cushioned sneakers with uppers stylish enough for casual wear. Despite fashion flourishes like the faux leather overlays on the Overtake, these are actually for sport—an injection molded EVA foam midsole and well-cushioned footbed offer plenty of support, while the rubber-enhanced outsoles provide good grip on both slick roads and slick tile floors. Early testing reveals that the shoes likely aren’t durable for high mileage, but they’re great for sneaking out of the office for a quick, mid-distance lunch run without having to change shoes.

MORE INFO

Adidas’s response to the Nike Vaporfly and Alphafly is finally here: The Adizero Adios Pro drops June 30 in limited quantities. Like other super shoes, it uses a high stack height with lots of lightweight, high-rebound foam, but the Adios Pro’s propulsion system is unique. Instead of using a carbon plate, the company inserted five carbon rods into the midsole to mimic the metatarsal bones. The rods attach to a nylon and carbon fiber heel plate; the system is designed to stabilize the ankle while limiting energy loss. We’ll publish our running impressions as soon as we get a pair to test.

MORE INFO MORE IMAGES

The April release of Saucony’s entry into the carbon-fiber-plated shoe wars was overshadowed by Covid news and quarantines. But just because the Endorphin Pro didn’t generate much fanfare (and there are technically no races to run this year) doesn’t mean this shoe won’t deliver on speed—and PRs. The geometry of the shoe puts you in an aggressive position, turning heel-strikers into midfoot strikers by aligning hips forward. It has a stiff forefoot design that encourages quick turnover and efficient toe-off, and an 8mm heel-toe offset. The fit is snug, with a more cushioned midsole as compared to similar race shoes. Check it out if you’re looking to go fast—it seemingly takes effort to slow down and take an easy day in these.

When Brooks first introduced the Levitate three years ago, it marked the first use of the brand’s DNA Amp, a high-energy polyurethane/TPU-based foam similar to Adidas’s Boost. The shoe had a firm, flexible midsole that was ideal for middle distances—but was somewhat beefy compared to the average running shoe. Now in its third incarnation, the Levitate is heavier than ever but still has all the responsiveness and rebound fans liked the first time around. It’s no lightweight, cushioned Hoka-type, but runners who like a firmer platform with a lot of spring will find a lot to like here. And if the shoe still feels too hefty for you, just wait: The Levitate 4 will be here as soon as late summer, with a new and improved DNA Amp midsole reported to weigh 20 percent less than the 3.

The Hurricane is Saucony’s time-tested stability shoe—ideal for keeping your feet cushioned and cozy on long runs. Neutral runners will likely find it heavy and overbuilt, but overpronators looking for top-notch cushion, support, and energy return will come away satisfied. At the Hurricane’s midsole, Saucony wraps a medial post in lots of bouncy PWRRUN+ foam and plants it all on a rocker sole for a smooth ride that belies the shoe’s overall heft. A soft, plush ankle collar, heel cup, and cozy upper made of breathable mesh give it a luxurious-feeling fit.

As springy and fast as its name would suggest, the Ricochet is for those who like a firmer feel with high energy return. The shoe mashes up two of Brooks’s proprietary foams, DNA Amp and BioMoGo DNA, for a midsole that’s lighter than other shoes in the energize line without losing the durability and rebound. The cost of this blend is cushion—as in, the lack of it. Our testers found that the Ricochet started to feel harsh on longer runs, but mid-distance runs and speedwork allowed it to shine.

The Cavu feels both strange and familiar, largely due to Hoka hallmarks like a rocker sole, and simultaneous deviation from them, as felt in the stiffer-than-average midsole and narrow, second-skin upper. Although it took a few runs to break in our test pair, we ultimately found the shoes to have snappy rebound and just the right amount of lightweight cushion for speedwork and race day. Runners who prefer a more forgiving fit and more cushioned landing pad might want to try the brand’s Rincon line.

Allbirds is known for making casual shoes so breathable and cozy they can moonlight as house slippers. The Tree Dasher is the brand’s first foray into dedicated running sneakers—and it’s a complete departure from how athletic shoes are traditionally made, thanks to a sustainable sugarcane midsole in place of standard petroleum foam. We felt that the shoe absorbed impact on par with trainers like the Brooks Ghost and Saucony Ride, everyday trainers that work well for most people. Overall, the Tree Dasher is a smooth-riding shoe—it’s probably too heavy to replace your race-day favorite, but it has all the protection and performance you need for recovery runs, base miles, and gym workouts in a stylish and eco-friendly package.

Designed for shorter runs and speedwork, the Speed 300 Racer 2 is a lightweight, minimal-cushioned shoe that rewards fast, efficient runners who aren’t prone to injury. We’ve long loved the Caldera for its ample cushion and grippy yet non-aggressive lugs—both of which made it a great option for runs that cross both road and trail. This time around, the shoe gains a thicker outsole. It’s made from an EVA-based, biodegradable foam that adapts to your foot shape and gait, and an overall roomier fit. Yet it still feels light and energetic instead of bulky, with all of the protective features and comfort that have made it such a go-to trail trainer.

Hoka’s latest Clifton is unlike any Clifton you know. The shoe sheds some of the weight it packed on over the years and uses the springy, compression-molded EVA midsole we loved in Hoka’s EVO Speedgoat. Tacks on the rubberized foam sole and an extended heel (a softened version of the Hoka One One TenNine’s giant, shelf-like landing pad) smooth out landings. Our Runner-in-Chief particularly loved the lighter overall package and thin, one-piece air mesh upper, which locks down your foot without adding excess bulk or heft. Altra designed this shoe specifically for cross-training, with added support and flexibility where you need it for lunges, box jumps, burpees, or whatever else is in your home workout rotation. The shoe has a wide toe box with lots of midfoot support and foot lockdown for forward and lateral movement. A grippy rubber outsole has plenty of traction for gym floors or the treadmill, but not enough for trails or slick outdoor surfaces. You’ll also get enough cushioning through the midsole for shorter runs but probably not enough for long distances.

With loads of plush cushioning, the Arahi struck us as a stability trainer perfect for either recovery or race day, depending on the runner. The 4 makes a better case for the latter use, thanks to a new streamlined upper and an overall lighter-weight feel. We liked the new upper’s breathability and wide, accommodating toe box. Less universally welcome was the stiffness of the midsole—petite runners on our test team found it to be harsh and unyielding, while heavier runners loved its overall comfort.

The biggest change to this bouncy, lightweight trainer is in its upper—while the previous Freedom had a divisive ISOFIT lace system and upper, this version returns to a more traditional upper with good, old-fashioned shoelaces and a contoured insole. Despite its return to form and addition of loads of plush cushioning, the Freedom 3 still has a lighter weight, lower profile, and no shortage of energy return. While Brooks’s Glycerin will always top the brand’s podium for plush cushioning, the Transcend stands next to it in second place. The shoe’s cushioned ride and stability system, including guide rails to bumper the foot, make it the perfect daily trainer for when you need more forgiving support. Although it has low energy return and a firm heel, according to data from our shoe lab, testers found that the midsole struck just the right not-too-hard, not-too-soft note with great push-off.

LEARN MORE

The new Air Zoom Pegasus 37 is almost upon us. Notable updates: The air unit, formerly the length of the midsole, is twice as thick and now only in the forefoot (for a springier toe-off). The bag has also been tuned so the men’s shoe is slightly firmer, running 20 psi to the 15 psi women’s model. Cushlon foam is gone, React is in—expect initially firm, but bottomless cushioning rather than initial plushness that packs out more quickly. And there’s a new mesh upper with a midfoot band for support. Check back in a couple months for our full review.

We loved the first iteration of this shoe for its mix of high performance and lightweight feel at a budget-friendly price. This time around, Reebok tweaked the engineered mesh upper to be more comfortable and stylish, using a two-tone color scheme and a softer, more flexible mesh. The shoe might use a cheaper midsole foam than Reebok’s other Floatride shoes, but it feels a lot springier and livelier underfoot than most other $100 models.

Mizuno pulled the midsole plate from this stability shoe and replaced it with three layers of dense cushion designed to stymie overpronation. It’s an overhaul that’s made the 4 lighter, more streamlined, and more flexible than previous Wave Horizons, without sacrificing stability. Our test crew liked the changes, as well as the plush forefoot and ultra-durable outsole, and found the shoe to be well-suited to long runs and mellower training efforts.

The already plush 1080 got even more Fresh Foam to make it one of the softest, bounciest shoes around. And yet it doesn’t feel overly stiff, thanks to the exaggerated curve of the midsole, particularly at the forefoot. Our testers gave mixed reviews to the engineered knit upper, which has been streamlined to shave weight. However, most agreed that the shoe felt fast and energetic—especially for a maximum-cushioning shoe—and capably handled everything from speedwork to long runs.

Not much has changed in this latest version of the Launch—the shoe continues to strike an effective balance between Brooks’ long-run-friendly Ghost and speed-focused Hyperion, with a soft but not-too-cushioned midsole. No, it’s not an April Fool’s Day joke or a sneaker dreamed up by the Onion staff—the TenNine is a legit shoe purpose-built for downhill racing. Hoka packed even more super-soft, squishy EVA foam than usual into these shoes to create an oversized heel that’s as protective and thick as it is comical-looking. We like the security and control we feel hammering down steep trails in these. Less appreciated is the price—at $250, it feels over the top for a shoe that can really only excel in one area.

The latest Inspire is more flexible through the midsole, where it packs two layers of soft foam with a denser plate at the arch. The Infinity Run is designed to protect you from injuries and stabilize your stride via lots of springy React foam and a distinct rocker shape. The upper showcases Nike’s latest version of Flyknit, which feels denser and more secure without sacrificing breathability. We’re still skeptical of research that the shoe actually prevents injuries, but couldn’t argue with how fast, well-cushioned, and stable it feels while we’re running.

The Hovr Machina is Under Armour’s entry into this year’s ever-expanding field of plated shoes. The Divide doesn’t initially look like a trail runner—its spaced-out lug pattern is far less aggressive than Brooks’ Cascadia or Caldera—but we found the shoe’s TrailTack outsole to be excellent on rocky trails and wet surfaces. The upper also provides solid water drainage, and the midsole’s firm cushion and rock plate are more than capable at protecting from rocks and debris. Our only complaints were with the shoe’s perceived stiffness and weight—we found them to be heavier and less softly cushioned than the brand’s other trail shoes. But one of our testers praised the shoe as more of an “old school trail shoe,” without the now commonplace fancy lacing system or wider toe box—and said that they held their own on every trail surface she tested them on.

This version of the DynaFlyte doesn’t get much of a makeover—the biggest update here is a reworked engineered mesh upper designed for better midfoot lockdown. The secret-project race shoe worn by 2018 Boston Marathon winner Des Linden and rumored Vaporfly contender doesn’t officially launch until February 27, but we got a first look this fall. Test team opinions were mixed: Some found the shoes to be too hard, others fell in love with the firm and fast cushioning from mile one. Designed to be light at the expense of durability, the shoe has a thick DNA Zero midsole that’s 45 percent lighter than the brand’s usual foam, and a carbon-fiber plate for quick take-off. It was built on a new last with plenty of space in the forefoot, and the upper was designed out of ultralight, water-resistant materials, including 25 percent nylon. MORE INFO

For the first time since the early 2000s, a carbon fiber plate graces an Adidas shoe: The company just announced the AdiZero Pro, a marathon racing shoe that should be ready for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The midsole is mostly composed of the TPU-based Lightstrike foam; there’s some Boost in the heel, too. The carbon plate is said to deliver flexibility at touchdown and snap at toe-off, so it’s unclear whether the shoe will be as stiff as the other carbon plate shoes we’ve seen from Nike and Brooks. The upper is dubbed Celermesh, Adidas’s thinnest upper material ever. We’ll post more information when we get our hands on a pair.

The controversial race shoe has already been everywhere—in national news headlines, in shoe debates all across the internet, and on the feet of Eliud Kipchoge when he broke the two-hour marathon barrier in October. And soon it will also be in stores, according to Nike. The Air Zoom Alphafly sports a single carbon-fiber plate, ZoomX cushioning, Zoom Airpods, knit upper, and a 39.5-millimeter stack height. That number is critical for the shoe’s race legality—this week World Athletics announced it will be competition legal based on new guidelines that dictate any shoe with a sole thicker than 40mm, or shoes with more than one plate, be banned.

Break out this low-profile trail runner on race day—it’s got a fast and firm feel with aggressive, multidirectional lugs that can claw into any surface. Runners accustomed to more cushion might find it feels hard on rocky, technical terrain, but for those who like a more connected ground feel on the trail, this is a top shoe. Overall, the show brings together a winning list of off-road features: a lightweight feel; snug, supportive fit; actual foot-shaped toe box; and tacky outsole.

The cushioning on Saucony’s latest Triumph is thick, soft, and surprisingly lightweight, thanks to new PWRRUN+ technology at the midsole. While the shoe is slightly on the bulky side, our testers found it to be a huge improvement over the previous model and loved that it felt bouncy and propulsive for both long runs and tempo runs. “Basically, you land, your heel feels amazing, but it doesn’t give the feeling of sinking into a massive hotel pillow,” one tester said. We also gave high marks to a soft upper that wraps the foot in even more protective comfort.

Built for running hundreds of miles (over a month, a week, or all at once), the Speedgoat 4 has all the protective softness you need to go long on technical trails—though some of our testers felt that plush cushioning comes at the expense of reactiveness and a foot’s ability to connect to the trail. Nevertheless, we found the shoe to be the GOAT when it comes to racking up high trail mileage and tackling ultras. A Vibram outsole with 5mm lugs sticks to any trail surface; the breathable mesh upper resists debris and drains creek water.

New Balance tweaked the 860's medial post and reshaped the angle of the shoe’s footbed to make the shoe feel smoother on transitions without losing some of the pronation-offsetting features fans had grown to expect. Our testers found the v10 to have a nice mix of structure and softness, cushion and responsiveness, style and stability.

Best known for its trail shoes, Salomon has finally dialed in the cushioning on this latest iteration of the brand's Sonic road runner. A running shoe’s midsole is typically its most polluting component; all of the prevailing foams come from petroleum, after all. Its highlight is a castor bean oil-based midsole, eliminating the need for plastic foam in the shoe. Read more about the shoe here.

At 7.7 ounces for a men’s size 9 and 6.3 ounces for a women’s size 7, it’s extremely lightweight, yet there’s enough EVA foam in the midsole to deliver classic Hoka cushioning. The Meta Rocker sole is rounded just behind the ball of your foot, rolling you onto your forefoot as you progress through your stride. The exposed foam on the outsole wears quickly, but thankfully, there’s a lot of midsole between you and the road.

Mizuno’s Wave Prophecy 8 is absurd, both in construction and in price. A full-length Wave plate disperses impact forces across the shoe, making it ideal for heavier runners and hard-hitting heel strikers. A layer of EVA-based foam atop the plate provides cushioning and a blown rubber outsole delivers superb durability and traction, our testers found. It costs as much as two trainers, but the Wave Prophecy 8’s mostly plastic midsole should outlast the average EVA foam-based shoe.

It’s a chameleon of a shoe, delivering high rebound and soft cushioning all in the same BioMoGo DNA midsole. That, combined with its modest weight, makes it work for fast and slow days alike. Our testers described the upper as “ultra comfortable” and lauded the shoe’s usability for every type of training run.

The sole is toothy and the lugs are spaced out to shed mud as you move, and a full-length rock plate gives you serious impact protection. The Kevlar-bolstered upper is similarly protective: If you’re looking for the ultimate trail shoe, this is it.

The Nike Joyride Run FK has 11,000 beads within its midsole. In practice, the Joyride Run is plush but not propulsive, and probably too expensive for the beginning runners for whom its designed. That said, it’s soft and forgiving for walking around and easy runs, so check it out if you’re after a novel cushioning system that takes the sting out of hard-surface running.

The New Balance Fresh Foam More is thick: The respective heel and forefoot stack heights are 34mm and 30mm, giving you loads of cushioning underfoot. And at 10.3 oz for a men’s size 9 and 8.1 oz for a women’s size 7, the weight penalty for all that Fresh Foam is minimal. Some testers found the shoe slightly bulky, but Hoka One One devotees should consider it a worthy alternative.

The Phantom is Topo Athletic’s most cushioned shoe to date. The new Nike Free RN 5.0 doesn’t operate under the auspices of being a running shoe. Rather, its ultra-lightweight construction, firm cushioning, and deep flex grooves are ideal for foot-strengthening—Nike doesn’t recommend you run more than 3 miles in them.
