There’s a lot to consider when buying a sports bra: support, fabric, comfort, coverage. However, there's one thing you probably haven’t thought of: pockets.

But you should. The perfectly placed pocket answers an age-old running question: Where do I stow my stuff? While armbands, running belts, and hydration packs all have their place and purpose, we—as runners—are nothing if not particular about our gear (come on, you know it’s true). Some swear armbands throw them off balance, while others hate the idea of a bag bouncing on their back or waist. And even if you sometimes wear a pack or belt, you might still want a super-accessible pocket for emergency essentials like tissues, gels, and lip balm, or something fuss-free for shorter runs.

That’s where sports bras with pockets come in handy. You’ll find bras with sectioned-off pockets that keep you organized and larger pockets that feel limitless—and if the thought of any added chest-bounce sounds awful to you, opt for a pocket in the back instead. Even better? There’s no need to sacrifice the support and performance fabrics you expect from a modern sports bra.

Does Storing Your Phone in Your Bra Pose a Health Risk?

Can storing your phone in your bra heighten your chances of getting breast cancer? According to Diana Medgyesy, M.D., a medical oncologist at UCHealth in Fort Collins, Colorado, the evidence says it doesn’t. “There is no conclusive data to suggest that cell phones are linked to cancer,” she said. “It is most likely an evolving field since cell phone technology and use of cell phones are changing rapidly.” Use your own discretion on whether or not to run with one.

The bras below were vetted by our staff and team of local wear-testers of various bra sizes and running levels. They packed phones, keys, fuel, credit cards, and/or cash into the bras’ pockets as they logged their runs and engaged in intensive cross-training activities.

The vibrant Pockito by Oiselle has not one, not two, but three pockets. A middle chest pocket provides easy access for your smartphone or race fuel. One of our test editors ran a marathon in the Pockito and appreciated how the pocket stored two race gels. We were wary of underarm chafing (the other two pockets are located on each side), but found storing items caused no friction—so long as they are slim, like cash or a single house key.

The bra’s band is brushed with Inverno Blend lining, an Italian micro-nylon and elastane mix that pulls away moisture and is wool-soft. While the rectangular outline was quite obvious, our tester appreciated how easy it was to grab her iPhone mid-run.

“This is the bra with the Koala Clip-style pouch in the back for phones, and I loved it,” said test editor Morgan Petruny. “I did some toe-touches expecting it to fall out, but it didn’t, and when I took out my phone at the end of my run, it was bone-dry even though I was sweaty.”

The Sarah bra is a lightweight racerback, with a low open-back design to help you cool down during hot workouts. It’s a moderate impact sports bra for A to DD cups and it's made of accommodating—but supportive—four-way stretch poly-spandex fabric.

Finally, a sports bra with a back phone pocket that’s not hard to reach when it comes to dropping in/taking out your smartphone. One of our testers said she loved how Rabbit’s pocket cradled her phone, as opposed to the too snug, too thick compartments often found in sports bras with a similar design.

That same tester, who is a 36D, found she could only wear the bra for short workouts, however. The straps dug into her shoulders leaving “not-so-cute” red lines. This may be a support issue, though. Another tester, who is a 32D, didn’t experience any skin indentations after her runs.
