This is one of the friendliest races going and as a result runners return each year to try to set a new PB and raise funds for Wakefield Hospice. The race atmosphere is hugely popular, as racers support each other as they pass on the out-and-back course, and the crowds cheer them throughout. Although there is one hill on the way out, this changes into welcome downhill on the way to the finish line, so overall it is seen as a fairly forgiving course, and it’s possible to set some speedy times.

    What do the runners say?

James S: Lovely event, really good for Wakefield. Lots of clubs attend as well as individuals. An event really open to all abilities. Closed roads with lots of marshals, very friendly and encouraging volunteers.

Louise G: My favourite 10k, done it for the last 2 years. It was very well organised and a great atmosphere. Will be entering again next year.

Francesca B: I’ve done the 10k over the last few years. It’s an undulating out and back route. Over the years I’ve been doing it, the event has got bigger and so have the crowds. Will be back again next year

On their success at the Challenge Awards, organisers Wakefield Hospice said: “For the hospice to receive this award, voted for by our supporters and the community we serve, is very humbling. We set up the Wakefield Hospice 10k with Maggie Still and Ron Needham back in 1995, and each year the event has grown and grown into what it is today. It was one of the first 10ks in the North of England, and we held the European 10k record for many years thanks to Luka Cherono’s incredible 27.57 run in 1997. A big thank you has to go to our event sponsors who have invested so much in the event over the years, the Wakefield community, our runners, volunteers, supporters and staff who have been involved in the event during the last 24 years. This award is dedicated to all those patients and families who ultimately benefit from this incredible fundraising event.”

Here’s to another 25 years of this brilliant 10k.

    And the runners up…

2nd Place: Simplyhealth Great North 10k - By The Great Run Company

Over 5,000 people take part in ‘the North East’s biggest 10k running event’, which takes participants past landmarks such as the Millennium Bridge, Sage Gateshead, and along Quayside. It’s not all pretty views, however, as runners will have to dig deep during the ‘Slog on the Tyne’ uphill section. This is all before finishing with a grandstand victory lap in the Gateshead International Stadium.

3rd Place: Run Tatton Half Marathon & 10k - By RunThrough

Taking runners through a stunning estate in Cheshire, which includes a deer park and award-winning gardens, this is one of the most scenic 10k events in the running calendar. It’s a relatively flat course, so there’s also a chance of setting a new PB. If all goes well during the Saturday 10k, you can even sign up for the half marathon the next day.
